Hi Everyone,

I am happy to announce that the TRANS|FIGURATE exhibition has finally been rescheduled!

Opening Reception: 4/16 18:00-21:00, Performance 20:00

Exhibition: 4/16-4/17 11:00-18:00

Half of the proceeds will be donated to Second Harvest in support of the victims of the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.

Also, please note that the live streaming on ustream has unfortunately been cancelled this time.

Coding in life drawing

I have been dabbling in coding for my artwork for some time now with programs like Processing, Mathematica, IOGraph, and Scriptographer. Though my programming skills are still just getting off the ground, I have been playing with this stuff on my laptop live in figure drawing sessions and have been getting some really unexpected and exciting results. I just spent a week in NYC going to Spring Studio 3 sessions a day playing with this stuff, see some examples above. The reactions of people in both Tokyo and NYC to me drawing on a laptop in figure drawing have been priceless.

EMOTISCAPES exhibition

“emotiscapes” is a series of portraits of family & friends inspired by charles darwin’s “the expressions of the emotions in man and animals”, and each work strives to flesh out a different one of darwin’s archetypes of human emotional expression with its own unique touch, color, and composition. every individual shows a certain face to the world, but occasionally a rich flash of emotion flows dramatically through its features. through the opposing approaches of gesticulation and delineation he has culled from america and japan, he strives to capture the power of the fleeting emotion and in contrast intricately map out and break down the resulting features. the works aim to challenge the traditional ideals of portraiture in the depiction of the subject and in the frame, which is brought into the composition and realized through taping inspired by the screenprinting process.

「emotiscapes」(エモティスケイプス)は、世界各地を巡りながら描き続けているスケッチが基になっています。今回のポートレートのシリーズでは、チャールズ・ダーウィンの著書である「人及び動物の表情について」を基盤とし、ダーウィンが考える人間の感情表現を独特のタッチや色、構成で具現化することを試みています。人は誰でも世間に向ける顔を持っていますが、偽りのない感情が溢れ出る瞬間があるはずです。そんな一瞬を、アメリカと日本の文化の違いを排除した上で独特の感性で切り取り、力強く、かつ繊細に仕上げています。又、スクリーンプリンティングの作業中に編み出したテーピングを用いたフレームなど、伝統的なポートレートの描写に新しい技法を取り入れることにもチャレンジしています。

GEISAI is a giant art show/competition created by takashi murakami to help the struggling art scene in japan. unfortunately i'll only be able to stay until about 3pm, then i have to run directly to the airport to catch a 6:30pm flight to LA. wish the timing was better, but busy is good..

the event was a success in so many ways - what a great way to celebrate the studio, the series, and the potential for all different types of events that we might be able to hold in this space. there was a total of almost 200 visitors throughout the evening, and red bull was generous enough to sponsor the event in their usual stealth. thanks to kotaro, yumi, yuko, mizuki, michiyo, arnar, jumpei, tim, and felix for all your help in making it happen!

Please join me for the opening reception of my recent series FACELLATIONS this Saturday evening at my new studio in Meguro. As this is the first event at the studio, it is also a celebration of its completion.

FACELLATIONS is a series of hand-silkscreened prints of drawings from the past year. Inspired by life in crowded cities, my relentless travel schedule, and elements of mathematical tessellations and bacteria colonies, the works are a light-hearted commentary on the relationship of human beings to their surroundings and to each other in an increasingly crowded world.

「FACELLATIONS」は、この１年の作品をシルクスクリーン技法で表現したものです。
忙しない街での暮らし、容赦ない出張スケジュール、数学的な平面充填、バクテリアコロニー（培養媒体上で目に見える大きさに成長した単細胞生物の集合体）などから発想を得ています。これらの作品は、徐々に混み合っていく世界の中で起こる、人間を取り巻く環境とお互いの様子をユニークに表現しました。

it was a long 3 day marathon, but the new studio is finally finished! thanks to jonathan for co-building it with me, and thanks to kotaro and everyone else who helped out with the finishing touches. the pictures above show the process, starting with the truck we rented and finishing with the last coat of urethane drying. the 4 step design was decided on since the garage had originally had an 8 degree downward slope.
