“emotiscapes” is a series of portraits of family & friends inspired by charles darwin’s “the expressions of the emotions in man and animals”, and each work strives to flesh out a different one of darwin’s archetypes of human emotional expression with its own unique touch, color, and composition. every individual shows a certain face to the world, but occasionally a rich flash of emotion flows dramatically through its features. through the opposing approaches of gesticulation and delineation he has culled from america and japan, he strives to capture the power of the fleeting emotion and in contrast intricately map out and break down the resulting features. the works aim to challenge the traditional ideals of portraiture in the depiction of the subject and in the frame, which is brought into the composition and realized through taping inspired by the screenprinting process.

「emotiscapes」(エモティスケイプス)は、世界各地を巡りながら描き続けているスケッチが基になっています。 今回のポートレートのシリーズでは、チャールズ・ダーウィンの著書である「人及び動物の表情について」を基盤とし、ダーウィンが考える人間の感情表現を独特のタッチや色、構成で具現化することを試みています。 人は誰でも世間に向ける顔を持っていますが、偽りのない感情が溢れ出る瞬間があるはずです。そんな一瞬を、アメリカと日本の文化の違いを排除した上で独特の感性で切り取り、力強く 、かつ繊細に仕上げています。又、スクリーンプリンティングの作業中に編み出したテーピングを用いたフレームなど、 伝統的なポートレートの描写に新しい技法を取り入れることにもチャレンジしています。
